Chaturdash Devta Temple-The Temple of Fourteen Gods and Historical Importance.


It is about 6 km away from Agartala. It is called Fourteen Gods Temple or locally named is Chaturdash Devta Temple. It is said that, before 1770 A.D, the images of Fourteen Gods were in Udaipur in two temples beside Tripureswar Bhairab Temple. In 1770 king Krishna Manikya was defeated by the Shamsher Gaze, then he shifted his capital from old Agartala and images of Fourteen Gods were also taken to the new capital and installed in a new temple. It is to mention that, Udaipur was a capital of Tripura and later it was shifted to Agartala in 1840A.D.

The famous Fairs or Puja of the Fourteen Gods as Kharchi Puja, a grand fairs is being celebrated in and around the old Palace. The worship of the Fourteen Gods has been old history. During the time of the Mahabharata, Trilochan, a contemporary of Yudhisthira was the king of the Tripura who used to worship these Fourteen Gods as royal deities. The tradition continued with all the subsequent kings of Tripura. Kharchi Puja had observed during the month of July in every year and very famous in Tripura. The fairs is organized in seven days long affairs and old Agartala wears a gala festivals which look with thousand of peoples celebrating the auspicious occasion irrespective of caste and creed and religion.

The fair comprises an admixture of Vedic and ethnic forms of rituals performed by groups of priests known as ‘Chantai’. The rituals chantings language is neither in Sanskrit language nor in Tripuri dilect known as Kokborok. The language of the secret mantra is only known by the principal priests who lernt it from his ancestor and will pass on the same to his successor. This tradition is old aged and dates back to the period of antiquity and nobody else is allowed to write or listen to or even memories the mantra. The images of the Fourteen Gods do not consist of full body and only the images of the heads of the Gods inside the temple.
