DEOTAMURA
This is the another very important archaeological spot inTripura which is situated at the southern part of Baramura hill range. This place is enriched with some very unique rock carving of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. All the relief images found here have beencarved frontallyon rock wall just beside river Gomati.Significantly works are some relief panels carved in low relief and these are more or less bordered with either straight engraved lines creating square formsor very conventionallycarved arches like formations. Important panels are the panels of five deities, panels showing thirty seven figure and colossal images of MahishMardini. The panelof five deities isvery important as there is already a living tradition of worshipping fivedeitieas generally known asPanchopasana. It is difficult to say whethere there is a connection between this panel and the customes of panchapasana or not.The deities is probablyBishnu(1.50mt}placed in the centre of wholecomposition.Othere four images are carved on the four sides of the central one . Avove all there is the images of Shiva probably [2.40mt] with his his banana as usual . Just below the central images four armed Goddess is there.Baishnabite faith can be seen as the panel shows Bishnu as the centraldeities. Each figuredcarved withinengraved squarish boundary. The whole composition is bordered with aengraved formation which has a multifoiled archat the top. Othere panel shows are thirty seven figures perhaps pilgrims taking part in religious procession. All these are carved in low relief .
The most important rockcut image of Deotamura is the image of Mahish-Mardini.The ten armed mother Goddess .
The relief images of 13mtrs,high[45ft].This one is atadistance is almost1.5km fromthe prementioned works. It show the rounded calm face broad strong shoulder and stand in Pratyalidha attitude.Upper portion of body shows minimum rounded volume atleast, but the hand and lower portion are carved rigidly,no attemptto make them soft and lively can be seen. The Mahishasur carved under her feet is also made in the same manner.Presence of multifoiled archin Deotamura relief is significant,it is considered as feature adopted from the arts of Muslims period,Sculptures both relief and single piecesof Ahom-Manikya periodoften show the particular feature.
